TO Play, AND also help employee some of the coaches who otherwise would have to be let go. YOU guys seriously rock!

And Spring users.. you simply call in with your coupon code and you get a 15% discount of your monthly bill EACH month! T-mbole and other phone services have similar! Coupons to Target, Disneyland, Hotels, Best buy, you name it. So check back my last blog post for that update and list of some of the coupons! So.. as promised earlier this week.. I wanted to share with you some of the pictures and highlights of Ben and I's week last week, at the Roots & Wings Art Retreat.
The classes were amazing, the food was.. i can't even describe how divine and "special" the food was. The entertainment was crazy awesome too.
There were three days of classes and so I wanted to share with you the artsy goodness from each one!
Day one was with Judy Wise, who I later was able to sit down with and have a sweet conversation with. SHe is such a kind and loving soul! I had such a great time getting to know her better!
She had us create on muslim and then, (just like on canvas).. use fabric (instead of paper), to crate a background of colorful goodness!
Then we painted over the fabric, the designs we wanted on our art pieces.. I chose a girl of course.. but she went through a couple of different phases..
phase one was a super sweet adorable little girl..
while I loved phase one.. something seemed off to me.. I guess I wasn't in the mood for super sweet lol.. so phase two moved into a more mature young women who maybe had a little bit of a mysterious side to her. a few more stories to be unearthed I guess.
and then use a sewing machine to free motion stitch layering and designs within the painting (kinda like doodling, or using stamps or rubons.. but with thread!).
It was SO FUN! While I have painted on fabric a lot and Sewn on fabric as well, I have never used a free motion foot before and can I tell you?? Holy cow that was SOO FUN!! Just being able to create what ever design you want and at your own speed. AND Thats when the girl REALLY came alive! I loved it!!
That night after a delicious dinner, we had the pleasure of listening to our own private concert from the Ms. Sarah Sample! SHe is one of my favorite music artists! Ben and I both have most of her songs on our ipods and so we were so excited! I met Sarah a few years ago and she has been a dear friend ever since.. but it was Ben's first time to meet her and that was pretty cool!
Day two was spent with Katie Kendrick, who i also got the chance to talk with a little bit.. and again.. HOLY COW SWEET!!! (wish I had a while week from learning from these ladies individually). Judy showed us how to bind and make our own books! ANd also showed us some of her wonderful art journaling pages within her own books.. how she paints and collages.
Very free and very just open. This was the day I was feeling SUPER sick. So I didn't get to very much. I didn't go very "deep" as far as creating, but in the morning I was able to design a couple of art pieces on watercolor pages.. which I am not sure now if I will just cut and matte.. or actually bind into a book?
this little girl was an easy sketch drawing, that I then filled in with paint.
Then I got a little more "adventurous" and did another girl, but this time, went back to the sewing machine and used the free motion foot again, to create the wings, and hearts on this girl. Giving her a bit more dimension..
"going away can be the first step towards going home" and for so many reasons this quote rang very true to me!
Speaking of table "mates" Ben and I were luckily enough to share a table with three other FABULOUS women! Annie, Carrie and Julie! (many of you know Julie from her own art and online classes.. Julie Fie-Fan Balzer!).. She was a HOOT and her and ben got along REALLY good lol. It was fun.
I got really sick after lunch on day two so spent the rest of that afternoon in bed. But got up long enough that evening to go to an evening class that Stephanie Lee was doing on Food preservation.. it was AWESOME.. totally inspired me to come home and can some of my own jams and spreads!
(Ben loves canning and usually grows a Garden each year.. and cans the food he grows.. this year.. we were kinda busy finishing the old/new house.. but next year I cant wait to help him!)
Day three, I didn't DARE miss.. (i had been up all night with my head in the toilet again).. but it was the day I had truly been waiting for.. Misty Mawns class! Misty taught her a small glimpse in the process of how she creates her beautiful girls! I wish I had a whole week with this girl!
Ben REALLY enjoyed this class as well, as he is just starting to get into faces and collage.. and that was her main focus!
I had such a great time.. just soaking in her process of painting faces, which is SOO different than the way I teach for sure! It was awesome.. this is one of the girls I did.. (this was just a WIP.. not finished yet)..
on thing I had a hard time doing was letting go of the 'hard" lines I tend to use when i create. Misty really doesn't create "realistic" or proportioned girls. SHe prefers loose, awkward looks which I LOVE but find it so hard to paint!! I really learned a lot from her!
This was the second girl was was able to get done..
I did notice that I tend to be a bit heavy on the eyes when I paint. While hers are very minimal. I think this next time, I am going to try and paint more like that and just see how it turns out.. since I always seem to do the same thing with my eyes! All in all, it was a FABULOUS weekend! During the week, the four teachers worked on two collaborative paintings while they weren't teaching.. and at the end of the class, ended up presenting them to the two fabulous hosts we had. Heidi (who we used her house to create in).. and my dear friend Lorraine, who's beautiful house we used to host the dinners, the concert and the art show in. It was a beautiful moment!
It was such a great weekend. We were sad to head home. I have to give a HUGE shout out to my dear friend.. Courtney.. (she is Lorraine's daughter and just lives a few doors down from Lorraine and Heidi)... she so graciously offered to let Ben and I stay at her house during the retreat.. so we wouldn't have to drive to stay in a hotel a few miles away. It was SO nice to walk back and forth to class each day, and have a place to just feel comfortable and welcome. SHe is seriously the sweetest girl and we adored her and her family!! THANK YOU sweets for letting us crash in your beautiful home!
So that is my re-cap of our awesome time last week. I have to say.. I am a bit addicted to art retreats now. This year I have been able to attend 3 (including jesse that was in December).. and it has CHANGED my world and perception in so many ways! Taking classes from other teachers not only help me grow as an artist.. but being at small intimate retreats also have helped me grow emotionally and spiritually. I always walk away a better me. I meet wonderful woman and start new life long friendships. I learn so much about myself and what I want out of life and what I have to give. REtreats.. specially when they are small like the ones I have been too, are truly life changing. If you ever get the opportunity to go to one.. DO! Or think about hosting your own with just you and your friends! It really does help you find a new perspective on life, art and just being you.
thanks for letting me share!!
