Creatively Inspired... with Julie Balzer and New Holiday workshop!!

First of all, many thanks for everyone who signed up for the She Art Workshop No 2! AND seriuosly.. thank you to everyone who posted last week on my blog post about Beautiful Heartbreaks.. wow.. reading everyone's stories and heartbreaks.. was soul filling.. if you know what I mean. ALways brings things back down to reality for me!  I got so sick on friday.. strep throat and seemed to be doing better by saturday night (On antibotics) but then sunday came and wow. .it was like I was hit in the face with it all over again! so  sorry if any of my vidoes from this week, I sound like a frog! lol such is life!

Julie Balzer is one amazing girl. I had her on a while ago and featured some of her art, books, workshops etc. Recently she came out with a line of stencils with Crafters Workshop.. and HOLY COW! can you say LOVE! of course I ordered just about every single one of them for our store.. (you can see THIS behind the art video  (on our new fall suplies) where i show how I use a lot of them in projects.. )
But then a few weeks ago, she asked me to particpate in a blog hop this week using her Triangle Stencil along with some other very talented girls!

 

Of course I SAID YES! and it wouln't be christy style.. if I didn't do a how to vidoe on my creation right? Here is a look at what I did..I have had this on my mind latley.. and the words really have rang true to me for several reasons " she found trust in the unexpected".  I talked last week about a hearbreak  I was going through.. and its amazing how God seems to put people in your life exactly when you need them.. so I created this piece for her. I talk more about it  and her in the video...

You can see below, I used the stencil on this part with modleing paste and a roller stamp

On this part of the canvas I used the stencil as a guide to doodle on some fun triangle art.

Creativley Inspired.... by Fall

Fall is my FAVORITE time of year. Well at least I say that every year but then just now typing it out load.. I realized that now since I discovered surfing behind our boat.. and I love being OUT on our boat.. it might be a really close tie for first with Summer now. awe.. Sorry Fall I promise I still love you!  BUT I DO love fall for totally different reason.. love the smells, the crips but warm air (we have had seasonable warm weather the past two weeks.. and I LOVE IT). The changing of the trees, the falling leaves, apple pies and apple cider, carving pumpkins, trick-or treating. I love sweaters and football games and snuggling under blankets with hot chocolate. I love everything about Fall. Too bad it doesn't last through November here. Lol.  I also love Halloween. and it's not because my birthday is the day before (my family always thinks it is.. but I promise it's not :))... it's truly because I LOVE that holiday! Besides Christmas.. it is by FAR my favorite holiday of the year. It's even a close tie for Christmas. (which is Ironici beacuse they are centered around two totally different things. Weird).

Anyhow.. this week I was inspired by fall, and I have been totally lame and not even taken out my few fall decorations that I do have.  I did buy a pumpkin the other day at TJmax..

 

Cute huH? I loved it! it was 7 bucks!!

 what's lame this cute little pumpkin is just sitting on my front entry way table... all by itself.. just waiting for the other decorations to come. haha. Sorry bud. It might be a while.

So besides fall, I was also totally inspired by Alisa Burke.. once again. (this girl has some seriously creative skills)

Last week, after I got home from our cruise, I was catching up on her blog and she had these freaking ADORABLE painted pumpkins. Totally cool. Which got me to surfing the web for other fun painted pumpkin ideas.. and I found this article here in country Living magazine  and this one here on HGTV's website  . Totally cute stuff. A few years ago we painted pumpkins instead of carving them.. and while it was super messy. It was a ton of fun.    Well It got me inspired to get out and do something different with MY pumpkins for this year.. since I haven't done any sort of deceoration.  In my own style. I was trying to think of the designs I loved.. and these three came to mind.  plaid, polka dots, and of course.. this week's monday moodboard theme, Chevron.. so this is what I came up with.. oh and before I start. I want you to know I actually video taped making all of these pumpkins. Did a total creatively inspired video for you and then my darn Mac is being so weird and won't load them into Imovie so I can edit them and post them to Youtube. Seeing how it is Wednesday night and I leave tomorrow for Spark, I don't have too much more time to mess around with it and get it to work. So if you see a video at the end.. it worked. If not. Sorry. I promise when I get back to post it!

I had fun with these  little babies.. and now my store bought pumpkin has some friends! :)

I used different techniques on each of them .... all fun and different! I linked any of the products I used from our store (they are highlighted in blue) as so many of you always ask me what I used. To make it easier to find!:) so here we go!

 

The first pumpkin was the polka dot pumpkin. For this one I actually used the Swiss Dot stencil (from our store from Crafters Workshop) and did black dots on the white pumpkin. (the pumpkin came already white, but you could easily paint it white with gesso!)

But I wanted to add some added texture to it.. and LOVE the look of handwriting.. so I got my black Big Brush Faber Castel Penout and wrote Happy Halloween in cursive, all over the pumpkin. I like how it gave it just one more added dimension!

 

and ended up with this look!

The next pumpkin, I used a plaid Technique. I use a yellow squash pumpkin for this one. I used Masking tape and taped stripes vertically along the pumpkin (in the video you can see how I did it.. hopefully I can get the video to work!) Then I sprayed the pumpkin with Color Wash spray from Ranger. I used the Sunset Orange spray and then used a paper towel to dab it a big. After it dried (which was fairly quickly) I then taped off the pumpkin again  (leaving the other tape still one)  except this time horizontally and then sprayed it again with Wild Plum Color Wash Spray.  Again then dabbed it with a paper towel and then pulled the tape off and this was what was revealed!

Then I added some texture with some rubber stamps.

Last I used my black Fabercastell Pen to draw black lines on the pumpkin, to give it a bit more definition and one more color to the plaid. You could also go back and do this with other Faber castell Big Brush pens. Like Orange, Green, Purple. Or even white!

My last pumpkin was inspired by The Chevron design from this week's moodboard. First I painted a purple Chevron design across the middle, then added some along the top and bottom in green and orange.

Then  again for more texture and a bit of doodling, I added black words and some "stitches" and more chevron shapes to the pumpkin with my black big brush Pen.

and ended up with this..

I had fun painting these! I am thinking maybe this year.. instead of carving pumpkins with our kids for Family Home evening.. we will paint them! and get out all my sprays and inks and Faber Pens and stamps. Seriously. How fun! still a bit of a mess.. but something totally different!

Anyhow, Just a fun little project you can do with your artsy friends, your family or just by yourself! I really hoped the video would work, but seriously.. could not get it to download and now I am heading to Spark first thing in the morning! So if ben can get it fixed while I am gone, I will post the video how to to these when I get back. I show you how to tape the plaid pumpkin and stencil, etc.. so it really makes more sense! Plus videos are always fun :)

OH one more thing! My sister was just blown away by your response to my blog post YESTERDAY about their skin care line, Muvazi!WOW! The orders just kept coming in all day long!  You have no idea what a blessing that was to them.. how much this meant to them to see the excitment and support for this awesome product. You guys freaking rock! ROCK! I tell you! She told me to tell you that the special price and coupon posted about yesterday (here) will run until the end of the month. (and then a little birdie told me they are going to do something special for you again in December.. when you will all be ready to need more.. can't wait for that!). Also, they started shipping out yesterday.. but they had so many orders that it may take them a few days to fill them all and get them all out.  They actually hand-make all the product themselves organically, which makes it even more amazing (they don't have someone else make it and just put their name on it). They actually mix all the ingredients together themselves and fill the bottles and package it and everything. Another big reason I love it. Tia's husband Deren has been working for other people for years, creating amazing products in skin care, hair care and household goods.  Now his is excited to be doing something that he truly loves and is his own work of art.   TRULY.. you guys are going to LOVE it!

Well, I am headed to SPARK! to be with my creative friends.. and see the Magic that that goes on there! Margie is one of THE MOST CREATIVE people I know! I promise to take lots of pictures, and plan to do a huge post on it when I get back next week. you know the handmade decorations are going to be amazing! if you live in the area (SLC or Provo area).. and haven't signed up for Spark or can't make it to the classes.. make sure to stop by the Artisan Fair! Creatively Inspired.... by the talented Alisa Burke

 
This past May, I had the pleasure of attending Donna Downey's Inspired Event. I was particularly excited to meet on of the teachers there.. Ms. Alisa Burke!

I was a huge fan of her work, her fabrics, her workshops, her blog.. her stamps!! Lol.. Just a fan!  So when it came time for her class, I couldn't wait to just dive in and learn from her. She was teaching us how to create our own fabrics by layering with stamps, our own doodling, screen printing and more.

 

 It was just a really great, relaxing class. The best part was when she ended up at our table and her and I were able to actually talk and meet. It's funny because I think we spent the better last half of the 4 hour class, just talking and talking. I was even MORE in love with this girl and her art because now I know she was not only one talented artist.. but a fun, down to earth girl as well. We just clicked instantly and I knew we would be long life friends. She's one of those girls that you just know.. after spending 2 hours with.. that you can just hang out and have a good time.. and just really enjoy it each other.   We exchanged phone numbers and have stayed in touch since then! Just love that girl! Well when I started this series, I instantly thought of her and doing some sort of  canvas piece, where I would paint/layer stamps, etc..  and raw piece of canvas and then make a purse or something out of it..

Which is something I also really enjoy doing. (last saturday during the canasta tournament, I doodled all over the paper-covered table through 5 hours of play :)) (which by the way.. ME and my partner, My SIL, Jayla.. WON!!! the entire tournament! it was the doodling.. it was GOOD LUCK! lol)

 

So this past week, when I saw THIS blog post  about this  LARGE Wall-Art canvas she has made, which is all completely doodling, I was INSTANTLY inspired .. and knew that is what I wanted to do my next creatively inspired art challenge on!

 

 

 So I texted her and told her my plan and of course as the gracious adorable person she is.. she said yes!  

 I knew I wanted to create something large scale, like hers.. but I thought to put my own spin on by it with mixing colors, using stamps to give the background some depth and texture. I also wanted to add a few more colors to it, as I thought it would be the PERFECT piece in my art studio! Well I sat down to create with the intention of videoing my process, and my friend Margie called.. I began to doodle.. and before I knew it.. our conversation was over and  I was already finished! painted and everything! (oops!) lol.. 

Sooooooo....I decided to create a second one I could video as well.. to show you the process I used. These are the two pieces I came up with..

here if my first one.. it's 3"x18" long..

 

 

I went with bright summer colors, something maybe I could put in my art studio.. or my daughter allie's room.

 On this piece I went with a more monochromatic flower.. so each flower is it's own color and just used shades of the color to give the flower dimension.

 
I did include on flower in the opposite corner that incorporated all of the colors.. to tie them all in together.

 

My second pieces.. which is the one I video taped for my blog.. was this piece here!

I intended on creating several flowers on this one.. like the first.. but got going and before I knew it ended up with ONE Big giant flower. I still may add a small flower in the upper right corner.. to even it out.

 

 

I also was going to do monchromatic flowers.. but ended up doing a mutlicolor flower instead..
 
 
 

After it was all said and done, I came up with two finished art piece and I honestly love both of them! If you want to see more of my process.. I have posted a youtube video below at the end of this post.. keep in mind it's MY Process.. not Alisa's.. as I am SURE she is way more "artist" than me! lol

I chomping at the bit   excited about her NEWEST online class, ( and you SERIOUSLY SERIOUSLY need to do it too)..  Beneath the Surface !     It's all about her process in creating art on fabric using layer  of paints, stamps, screen printing techniques.. (how to make your OWN screen prints.. which I promise ANYONE can do!!) Registration starts MONDAY and class starts August 15th! I am So going to be there.. you should join me! .. not kidding it will change the way you look at fabric art! Your OWN art and is a perfect medium for both SHe Art Canvases AND Art Journals! You also need to check out all of her other workshops.. I think she has like 7 or 8 online workshops that you can take and join now!

 

I made a video on my process (it's a Behind the Art Video and all in fast forward mode (or it would be WAY to long..) but I thought It might be fun to share my process a bit.. Anyhow.. thank you again Ms Alisa Burke. You are one extremely brilliant and talented lady. I still want to do a purse or something out of painted fabric.. but that is for another time. Creativley Inspired Art Challenge...#2

 
 

So as you know from THIS post here.. I wanted to do a new challenge for the summer to keep my creativity going. I am always inspired by other people and all forms of art, so thought this would be a REALLY fun change for me.

This week's challenge is TOTALLy out of my comfort zone and probably TOTALLY not what you would expect either. But when I was going through the list of things that inspire me.. I realized that there are so many things, art forms that inspire me. Not just mixed media, or fabric or canvas.. much much more than that. So this week I picked someone and something that I truly am always inspired by.. but something I have never tried before. Photo Art.

I grew up a large family.. my parents divorced when I was 7, and at the time i had 6 brothers and sisters. Well eventually my mom and dad both remarried which brought even more siblings into the mix (step brothers and sisters and an awesome half sister). When my mom remarried, she married a man who had 5 children and since his wife had passed away from cancer.. his children all lived with him.  So you can imagine when we all moved into together.. we were like the Brady Bunch on steroids! lol.. there was 13 of total, as my mom and step dad had a "ours" about a year after they were married. So 13 of us living under one house.. let me tell you it, it sure was comical.. but it sure was fun. I was lucky to have a new step sister.. almost exactly the same age as me. Cathi.. she was seriously hilarious. We fought all the time at first. Sibling rivalry? I guess? but over we actually become pretty good friend. I eventually moved out and lived with my dad, but when I would visit my mom during the summers or on weekends or holidays, here and I always had so much fun together. I was also so impressed with all the cool things she was involved in. Singing, Art, Acting.. but one thing I remember MOSt about her was her talent for doing hair and makeup. TRULY. She was an artist. So it wasn't any surprise when she graduated she went to beauty school. so here we are many many years later and she is still following that dream.  (this is her at work.. she's in the red)

She is part of an awesome business, Muse hair and makeup,  that does hair and makeup for weddings, editorial shots, Story shorts, catalogs, fashion shows.. and my favorite.. Stylized art photography shots.  Recently she has done some REALLY cool things.. here are just a few of her recent shoots she did the hair and makeup for..

So I thought it would be super fun to do something inspired by HER. I choose a really cool "circus" shoot she did the hair and makeup for.. and asked her if I could use her as my inspiration.. she said.. I can't wait to see what "circus" themed canvas you do!"

I replied back.. um.. no. .I mean I am actually going to attempt to do the hair and makeup and create a photo art shoot.. based on the Art she did the hair and makeup for! lol

so I did. THIS TRULY was out of my "knowledge" comfort zone.. I am not a hair or makeup artist, NOR am i a professional photographer.. but I do love all three.. so keep in mind this is PURELY for fun. Just something totally fun to do out of the norm for me.. and I can't tell you what a BLAST I had a blast! I asked my friends daughter to help me with the shoot... and we both had so much fun. TRULY. I hope you guys do this challenge too.

So this is the Photo Shoot I was totally inspired by.. LOVED the hair, the makeup and the style of the shot. Totally whimsical and funky. I call is the Circus Art Shoot. Hair and Makeup are by Cathi Barbi.. her daughter is the model. The photography is by Maren Delaney Photography.. and the awesome vintage hat was made by Bethany Lorelle. (she has amazing hair pieces by the way for purchase.. love it!)

 

 

 

 

isn't freaking awesome? I just love it. Seriously.. so talented. INSPIRING!!

So I realized I didn't have cool circus trailer in an old field.. like she did.. but I DO have a really cool vintage airstream trailer in my backyard.. we bought two years ago. We gutted it out and make it into a "jewelry" trailer.. were people could come buy beads and jewelry from us.  now we use it for storage.. but I would love to make it a fun "art" studio some day.. a traveling one :).

For the outfit.. we borrowed a couple of prom dresses that I layered over some lace dresses i already had.. plus added an old denim shirt over the top, to create an eclectic country feel.  For shoes, we used my red cowboy boots i got in texas last month. Then for the accessories, I used a mix of my funky jewelry and a   really cool feathered heaband I bought months ago.. (i haven't had the guts to wear), my friends daughter, Kacee.. was an awesome model! She had short hair, so I used a hair piece, to create length and then rolled the hair in curlers all over her head. I did her makeup in kinda of a high fashion.. dark smokey eyes.. with bright red lips. She's only 13.. but by the time we were done.. she looked like she was 20! lol.. good thing her dad wasn't there.. he wouldn't have liked that much.:)

so this is what we came up with.. I ended up doing three different "shoots".. just different clothes changes and a few hair changes.. but we had fun. oh and I have to say.. I normally like to photograph in "overcast" conditions.. but it was still pretty sunny out.. and it ended up being the BEST thing ever! All the cool sun effects you see in the photos.. just happened because I caught the light behind the trailer just rights.. so cool. couldn't have planned it better. again.. this was just for fun. For me, I am NOT a professional.. but I sure had fun doing this!

This first shoot was using the green prom dress with a ruffled grey dress I had, underneath. Inspired by the green dress in Cathi's photos.

 

 

 

 

 

 

The second shoot, I used a lace dress I had OVER the grey knit dress.. and pulled her back a bit..

 

 

 

The last shoot I did with this cool funky Purple Prom Dress. it had hints of pink under it and with the red boots.. oh it was awesome..

 

 

 

 


 

 

So that's it! I really seriously. Had so much fun. I told Allie we might just have to do another shoot next week.. this time with her.. and find another one of cathi's amazing art skills to be inspired by. Not to mention all the amazing photographers she works with.

Well it's friday.. and that means the weekend.. and lots of play! We are heading to Utah (ben and I) with some of our best friends who live right down the street from us. We do just about everything together. We are going to go to the Kenny Chesney concert. I not a huge fan.. I mean I AM SURE I will be when it's over.. but my friend Jennifer.. is the real fan. So I got us tickets for her birthday.. there are 3 of us couples going. and I can't WAIT! It was funny.. last night we were talking about the concert and someone asked.. what concert are you going to? I was like.. we are going to see Kent Chesley".. and my other friend Meredith (who is also going),  just looked at me like really? You don't even know his correct name? really? lol..  I was like what?? I don't listen to the radio??!! i don't even know how to say Ochre! lol.. .. I told ben later." no wonder when I was trying to look him and this concert  up on google.. nothing was coming up that matched it! lol.. I am such a dork. I guess that's me.. right?

well have a wonderful weekend! I can't wait.. I am more excited to just spend time with friends than anything. We have the best friends ever. Nice to have friend were all of us get along.. the husbands and the wives. Truly we do. They are like family. Even my family would tell you that. So can't wait!

Creatively Inspired.. a summer art challenge

 

This summer I knew I would have a lot of down time.. but  I REALLY wanted to do something to keep my creativity going!  I wanted do try something unique and different so  I thought a challenge for myself would be a great way to keep me going from week to week. Plus I thought it would be fun incorporate techniques and ideas I don't normally play with.

I was talking to my daughter about how I am always in AWE of ideas or pieces of art I see on the internet.. not just in mixed media art, but photography, sewing, en-caustic, jewelry, papercrafting.. the list goes on. So many talented women and men out there with some serious creative mojo.  And then it hit me! Why not do a challenge where each week I find someone.. a friend, a fellow blogger, an etsy store owner and hi-light a piece of THEIR art and then create a piece inspired by it! I loved the idea.. and mainly because I have so many awesome and talented artists I amdire..  who are creative in TOTALLY different mediums than I am. I wanted to expand my own creativity just a bit by using them as a mentor for my creative play. so I am excited to bring you a new summer series..

Creatively Inspired.. a summer art challenge

my first challenge is inspired one VERY brilliant gal..  Junelle Jacobsen.. and she is ONE amazing artist. She is a photographer at heart (which by the way.. she is coming here in September to take our family photos.. CAN NOT WAIT).., but she is also extremely  talented when it comes to mixed media, canvas and paint. I don't think she knows how talented she really is.. but I describe her as "Brilliant"

how I met Junelle was through the two workshops I currently offer.  She was a student in both.. and one afternoon I was enjoying some time just looking through the FLICKR gallery where students post their work from the class.  I kept seeing this AMAZING work and just seriously blown away by not just by the design, but the thought and technique put into it. I didn't realize it at first.. but all of the  pictures I kept commenting on.. were the same person's art.. Junelle's art.  So I immediately went to her profile and found her info.. then headed over to her blog and soon found out she was not only an awesome mixed media artist.. but a brilliant photographer as well!  (I have also recently hired her to start doing the kit photos for the Scarlet Lime website.. can't wait! lol) 

 Well one of the projects she posted.. that I fell crazy in love with..  it was an art journal piece she made for my 3 Hearts workshop..  this piece right here..

 
 

I WAS IN LOVE...

 

I love how she had taken book paper or any kind of paper for that matter and rolled it randomly into tubes and used it as a background AND an emebellishment on her art journal page. I could see incorporating this technique onto so many other things! (Like fabric and canvas! )

 

I love how she painted over the top of it.. just as if it was part of the background to her page.. I call it Paper Art. (not sure what she calls it..) but whatever it is.. it's brilliant.

 

After spending some time.. wiping the drool of my chin.... I emailed her and first asked her, if she would be a part of my summer art challenge and  if I could use this piece as inspiration for my own art piece. THEN  I asked her if she would be my friend and come take my family photos and play with my in my art garage and be my email buddy..  I think she thought I was a bit psycho! lol.. hopefully she doesn't. :)

After she replied back yes.. I knew I wanted her to be the first piece in my new summer series. I didn't want to do an art journal piece.. I wanted to create something that I could hang on a wall, so I created my piece on canvas. But this could SO easily be done with fabric on a dress, or wall quilt, or a pillow, or a piece of wood, inside a frame.. the possibilities are endless.  I didn't ask her how she did the technique.. because that is where the inspired part comes in. I wanted to look at her art and being inspired by what I saw.. and create my own piece inspired by it.  Here is what I came up with..  

 

I used a 10x10 canvas as my base..  I loved her color scheme so much.. I used that as inspiration as well.

 

I also liked her heart theme  so I used it too, though I  did end up making another piece that was in the shape of a flower.. turned out so cool as well (it's in the video below).

 

Once I painted over the paper rolls  I  added texture onto them like paint, stamps, rubons, and even my doodle pen.. I added another layer of dimension with the corrugated heart (which I made in the 3 hearts workshop)

 

 I made sure to alternate different sizes of the rolled paper, as well as use a mixture of patterns like dictionary paper, text paper and music paper.

 

I had SO much fun trying this technique out.. It truly WAS super cool.
I am going to for sure try this technique on other mediums. I can see a really cool pillow being made with this technique and rolled fabric.. I have the perfect fabric for it too. Might post that later.. :)

This was only one of Junelle's awesome pieces I was inspired by... she had so many more I loved.. but this Paper Art Technique was really cool.

Next week I will be heading out of town for an entire week to volunteer at my church's girls camp. We will be camping, hiking, floating the river.. and of course.. creating a little art.. which I can't wait for! I am going to teach them to create the She ARt Girls as one of the art projects. It will be so fun. So depending on what I am able to get done this week.. I may or may NOT post a creatively inspired Challenge next wednesday.. but if I can get my creative butt in gear, I will get a post ready before i leave :)..
